For people with no Amazon seller account yet

Can you even sell that on Amazon?

Amazon will not tell you until after you sign up. Ungating services will not tell you until after you pay them — through an account you don't have. We tell you here, free, before you stock: the gate verdict for a brand-new account, the exact documents, and the order that keeps inventory out of your garage.

We don't take money from platforms. We don't sell ungating services. That is why this site can print the verdict none of them can: for some categories, effectively closed to new accounts — start on the ladder instead.

Pick a category. Get the new-account verdict.

Nothing you answer leaves your browser. There is no email box at the end, and nobody will offer to submit anything through an account you do not have yet.

22 gates checked: 12 categories and 10 product types, each with a dated page. Brand-level gates change weekly and vary by account, so no honest site lists them — we say so instead of pretending.

Why this exists

Every incumbent answers from inside an account. You don't have one.

Amazon's answer

"Check Seller Central"

Amazon's own category pages tell you to look for the 'Apply to sell' button — inside the account it wants you to open first. Its metric is registrations, so it will never print 'don't buy inventory yet.'

The services' answer

$200–$350 per category

Ungating services submit applications through your Seller Central account — you must already be a seller to buy the help. Their honest sentence ('new accounts face higher rejection rates') is buried as FAQ #4 under the price.

Our answer

The pre-account verdict

A computed verdict for a person with no account and no sales history: open, approval-with-these-documents, or effectively closed — with the documents, the cost floor, and the order of operations. Dated, and re-verified on a schedule.

The sequence

Gate first. Account second. Approval third. Inventory last.

  1. Check the gate first — here, before you spend anything.
  2. Open your Amazon seller account (the Individual plan is fine for opening).
  3. Switch to the Professional plan ($39.99/month) before you apply — Amazon requires it before category approval applications.
  4. Apply for approval with the exact documents for your category.
  5. Only after approval lands: buy inventory that fits the approved category and your documents.
  6. List, priced against the category's referral fee — not against hope.

The mistake this sequence prevents

A beginner finds a product, buys $10,000 of it, and then meets the approval screen. The story is retold on forums every month because the sequence courses teach — product first — is backwards whenever a gate exists. Inventory is the last step of a gated launch, never the first.

Applying? Take the paperwork pack, not just the verdict

The checker gives you the gate. The Amazon Entry Kit gives you the paperwork: the per-category document checklists for all 22 gates on this site, the invoice-readiness worksheet, the starter ladder plan, the application-order playbook, and the rejection-recovery steps for when Amazon says no the first time.

The honest alternative

Some doors are open today

Not every Amazon start waits on an application. The starter ladder — used books, pet supplies, automotive basics and more — seasons a new account with real sales history, and history is the ingredient gated applications reward most.

The starter ladder — open to a day-one account

  • Used books & media: The classic first rung: open category, cheap honest sourcing, fast feedback. Generations of sellers seasoned their accounts here.
  • Pet supplies (non-food): Open on day one — toys, beds, bowls, leashes. Stay out of food, treats and anything medicated; those are gates.
  • Automotive basics: Open category; the skill it teaches is fitment accuracy, which gated categories later reward.
  • Home & kitchen basics (non-electric): Mostly open territory — avoid ingestibles, topicals and anything for babies, which are their own gates.
  • Toys outside the holiday window: With CPC paperwork for children's products handled, toys list year-round; the Q4 merchant-fulfilled criteria are a season to prepare for, not a surprise.

Straight answers

Questions every pre-seller asks us

Why won't Amazon just publish this list?

It publishes the taxonomy — inside Seller Central help, written for account-holders. The pre-account version, computed for a person with no history, is the page you're on. We record it from Amazon's published requirements and date it; Amazon can change a requirement at any time, and our change log says when we last verified each one.

Can't I just open the account and check?

You can — opening is free. The trap is the second step people take: buying inventory before the approval answer. The account costs nothing; the garage full of unsellable stock is the expensive way to learn a gate exists.

Do you sell ungating services?

No. We sell one thing — the $39 Amazon Entry Kit of checklists and worksheets — and the checker above works completely without it. A service submits forms through your account; it cannot create your invoices, your authorization letters, or your sales history.

What about brand gates — can I sell LEGO, Nike, Apple?

Brand-level gates change weekly and vary by account, so no honest site can publish a reliable list — anyone selling you one is selling fiction. Our verdicts stay at category and product-type level, where the published requirements are real.
