The starter ladder: where a day-one Amazon account actually starts

Last verified: October 21, 2026

Every gated category on this site ends with the same advice: start on the ladder. This page is the ladder — the categories a brand-new Amazon account can sell in today, what each one teaches, and how the history you build there becomes the ingredient no application can substitute.

Why history is currency

Amazon's gates lean on two things: documents and account history. Documents can be assembled in weeks. History cannot — it is, by definition, sales that already happened, shipped on time, to customers who stayed happy. Ungating services cannot sell it to you. The ladder is how you mint it yourself.

The rungs

Used books & media — the classic first rung. Open, cheap to source honestly, quick to grade, fast to learn shipping on. Pet supplies (non-food) — open, real demand, and the discipline of staying out of the food and medication lanes next door. Automotive basics — open, and teaches fitment accuracy, the skill that separates sellers from return-processors. Home & kitchen basics (non-electric) — broad open territory, carefully avoiding ingestibles, topicals and baby. Toys outside the holiday window — with CPC paperwork handled, a year-round category that becomes seasonal leverage in Q4.

How to climb

Sell one rung well for a season: on-time shipping, honest conditions, low defect rate. Keep your documents folder growing as you go — every invoice from real suppliers is a future application asset. When a gated category is your target, apply from a seasoned account with a documents folder, not from day one with hope. The application is the same; the account reading it is not.

The Door Finder at our family hub, FirstDoorCheck, can tell you whether Amazon is even your first door — plenty of beginners should start on a cheaper one and arrive here with an audience. The ladder works either way; it just works better in the right order.

Applying? Take the paperwork pack, not just the verdict
