New-seller gate check · For readers with no Amazon account yet

Can I sell skincare on Amazon as a new seller?

Skincare is the topicals gate in its purest form: approval required, invoices required, and claims read like a hawk. Serums are where beginners most often meet the cosmetic/drug line — a serum that 'repairs' is marketing; a serum that 'treats' is an unapproved drug.

Approval required first — with the exact documents below

Approval is genuinely available here — to sellers whose paperwork is boring and complete. Write your listing claims like a cosmetic, document like a manufacturer, and the gate is a formality.

This verdict is category-level, from Amazon's published requirements, last verified October 21, 2026. Brand-level gates change weekly and vary per account — no honest site can list them, so we don't pretend to. Amazon decides per account; this is the published requirement set, not a promise of approval.

The new-account reality

A new seller's strongest skincare application is their own product from a compliant contract manufacturer, with invoices and labels in order. Reselling famous serums is the weakest: authorization letters for prestige skincare are guarded, and 'I bought it at a distributor' without the letter rarely survives review.

The exact documents Amazon asks for

DocumentWhat it has to be
Commercial invoices10+ units within 180 days from the manufacturer or authorized distributor, matching your account exactly.
Brand authorization letter (resale path)From the brand or its distributor — the deciding document for resale applications.
Ingredient and label photosFull INCI ingredient list, directions, warnings, net contents — legible in the application photos.
Manufacturer compliance file (own product)MoCRA facility registration and product listing evidence from your manufacturer, plus safety substantiation for the formulation.

What Amazon rejects, and why

  • Before/after photos and treatment claims in the listing — drug claims sink applications and listings alike.
  • Invoices in a different business name than the seller account — an amateur mistake that reads as fraud to a reviewer.
  • Decanted or repackaged famous-brand serums — repackaging cosmetics destroys both the authorization and the product's compliance story.

Check it for your exact situation

Check this gate for your situation

The verdict for Skincare & serums depends on how you would sell. Pick your model — the gate answers differently.

The order that keeps you out of the garage-full-of-boxes story

  1. Check the gate first — here, before you spend anything.
  2. Open your Amazon seller account (the Individual plan is fine for opening).
  3. Switch to the Professional plan ($39.99/month) before you apply — Amazon requires it before category approval applications.
  4. Apply for approval with the exact documents for your category.
  5. Only after approval lands: buy inventory that fits the approved category and your documents.
  6. List, priced against the category's referral fee — not against hope.

Realistic cost floor before your first sale

$300–$900 — Application months on the Professional plan, a qualifying first order, and label/photography work for own-brand products. Planning range.

The starter ladder — open to a day-one account

  • Used books & media: The classic first rung: open category, cheap honest sourcing, fast feedback. Generations of sellers seasoned their accounts here.
  • Pet supplies (non-food): Open on day one — toys, beds, bowls, leashes. Stay out of food, treats and anything medicated; those are gates.
  • Automotive basics: Open category; the skill it teaches is fitment accuracy, which gated categories later reward.
  • Home & kitchen basics (non-electric): Mostly open territory — avoid ingestibles, topicals and anything for babies, which are their own gates.
  • Toys outside the holiday window: With CPC paperwork for children's products handled, toys list year-round; the Q4 merchant-fulfilled criteria are a season to prepare for, not a surprise.

Questions about this gate

Is a serum a cosmetic or a drug to Amazon?

It depends on its claims. Moisturizing and appearance claims: cosmetic. Treating acne, eczema, or hair loss: drug — different rules, and usually a closed door for beginners.

Do I need approval for each product?

Category approval is granted at the subcategory level; each listing still needs compliant labels and claims, and some brands inside remain individually gated.

What about K-beauty imports?

Imported skincare needs a US-responsible supply chain, compliant English labeling, and the same invoices/authorization. The gate does not care that the product is popular overseas.
